Welcome to Lisbon! Once your flight has arrived and your luggage is with you, we’ll transfer you to one of Lisbon's most famous neighborhoods, Baixa, where your hotel, the Pousada de Lisboa, is located.

 

The guide will be waiting in the arrival hall, at the exit from the airport customs, immediately as you exit. The guide will be holding a sign with your surname. Estimated distance airport-city Centre or vice versa ca.8 km. Estimated transfer time (normal traffic): ca.15-20 minutes.

On this food and wine-centered walking tour you will experience the perfect balance between sightseeing, cultural context and of course food and wine tastings.

 

Your foodie guide will meet you and together you will go on an exploration of Lisboa through the areas of Chiado and Bica. Start the tour on a short walk to some of your first food stops, try Lisbon’s traditional custard tart and a “bifana” (fried pork sandwich) at a little mom and pop spot, considered the pit stop for all locals looking for their delicious snack fix. Explore the Bica district, take a stroll through some offbeat streets and sit down at a restaurant specialized in “petiscos” (the Portuguese cousin of tapas) where you will taste and share an assortment of small dishes with some delicious sangria and amazing views of the city and the river. This foodie centered walking tour fully replaces dinner (or if you are a true epicurean, let’s call it a progressive dinner here each tasting stop comes filled with new flavors and traditional Portuguese dishes) and will immerse you in Portuguese culture in a unique and extremely fun way!

Today we're going to discover one of Portugal's most beautiful regions, the Alentejo!

 

Évora and Estremoz are two historic cities located in this region. Évora, the capital of the district, is known for its narrow, winding streets, medieval architecture and rich history. The city has a wide variety of monuments and historical sites, including Évora Cathedral, the Roman Temple, the Chapel of Bones and the University of Évora, one of the oldest in the country. Évora is also famous for its gastronomy, with pork dishes and Alentejo wines standing out.

 

Estremoz, located around 50 kilometres from Évora, is famous for its medieval castle that dominates the landscape. The city is also known for its marble production, with several quarries dotted around the region. In addition, Estremoz has a charming historic centre, with narrow streets, white houses and a lively central square. The city is famous for its handicrafts, especially hand-painted ceramics.

 

We'll also visit the Cartuxa winery, where you can taste the region's most famous wines.

After breakfast it's time to visit the beautiful Vila Viçosa, known mainly for its imposing Ducal Palace, which was the residence of the Portuguese royal family in the 16th century. The palace is now a museum that houses a rich collection of art and antique furniture. In addition, Vila Viçosa has a charming historic center with narrow streets and historic houses and is also famous for its marble production.

 

Afterwards, head to Castelo de Vide, a charming medieval village known for its narrow streets, white houses and breathtaking views. Its castle, dating from the 13th century, is one of the region's main tourist attractions. The town also has a well-preserved Jewish quarter, which tells the story of the local Jewish community. Castelo de Vide is a perfect destination for those looking for history, nature and peace.

 

End the day strolling through Marvão "the highest town in Portugal", due to its location on top of a hill at an altitude of over 800 meters. The town is surrounded by medieval walls and offers breathtaking panoramic views of the Alentejo landscape. Marvão's main attraction is its castle, built in the 13th century. The town also has a quiet and charming atmosphere, with traditional stone houses and narrow streets.

Drive from Marvão to Belmonte, a small town located in the district of Castelo Branco, Portugal. It is situated in the north-east of the country, close to the Serra da Estrela mountain range.

 

Belmonte is known for its rich history and cultural heritage. It was one of the last strongholds of the Knights Templar, an order of knights during the medieval period. The town is home to a marvelously preserved medieval castle, which serves as a reminder of Belmonte's historical significance. Another notable landmark in Belmonte is the Igreja de Santiago, a 13th century Gothic church that houses impressive religious art. The town also has a Jewish heritage, as it was an important center for medieval Sephardic Jews. The Belmonte Jewish Museum presents the history and culture of the local Jewish community.

 

Belmonte is also famous for being the birthplace of Pedro Álvares Cabral, the Portuguese explorer who discovered Brazil in 1500. There is a statue of Cabral in the town's main square, in honor of his contribution to the country's maritime history.

Serra da Estrela is the highest mountain in mainland Portugal, reaching a maximum altitude of 1993 meters. Located in the center of the country, it is a popular tourist destination, especially during the winter, due to the possibility of practicing snow sports.

 

In addition to the ski and snowboard slopes, Serra da Estrela has several other attractions, such as the Tower, the highest point in the country, where you can enjoy incredible panoramic views. It is also known for its natural landscape, with valleys, rivers, waterfalls and hiking trails.

 

The region produces a famous cheese, Queijo Serra da Estrela, which is considered one of the seven wonders of Portuguese gastronomy. Made from sheep's milk, it is a soft cheese with a strong flavor.

 

Serra da Estrela is also home to a nature reserve where you can see species of fauna and flora typical of the region. It's a place that attracts not only tourists, but also nature and wildlife lovers.

 

For those who love history, Serra da Estrela also has traces of ancient military fortifications, such as Linhares da Beira Castle and Belmonte Castle, which date back to medieval times.

We start our day by driving towards Viseu, a city in the center of Portugal.

 

Viseu is known for its rich history, its charming old town and its beautiful landscapes. The city is often referred to as the "City of Viriato", in honor of a Lusitanian warrior who resisted the Roman conquest. Viseu is also famous for its gastronomy, especially its traditional cuisine and delicious wines. It is a popular destination for tourists who want to explore the interior of Portugal and get to know its cultural heritage.

Heading towards the coast, we'll visit Aveiro, the "Venice of Portugal", so called because of its canals and typical boats, called "moliceiros". The city has unique architecture, with colorful houses and historic buildings such as Aveiro Cathedral and the Convent of Jesus. It's a must to try the local gastronomy, especially the ovos moles, a traditional sweet.

 

Costa Nova, meanwhile, is a beach located around 10 kilometers from Aveiro. The place is famous for its colorful striped houses, called "palheiros". In addition to the beauty of the houses, the beach itself is very popular with bathers, with fine sand and crystal-clear water. It is also a popular destination for water sports such as surfing and sailing.

Porto, the capital of the North! Known for its historic architecture, vibrant culture and Port wine production. It is the second largest city in the country and is located along the River Douro.

 

The city is famous for its iconic Dom Luís I Bridge, which connects Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, where many of the Port wine cellars are located.  Explore the city's many landmarks, such as Porto Cathedral, the Clérigos Tower and the Lello Bookshop. Porto is also known for its lively nightlife, with numerous bars and restaurants offering traditional Portuguese cuisine and live music.

 

Optional Tour - Cockburn's winery visit Tawny Tasting

Cockburn's winery visit is an experience to remember. Not just because of the quality of port you’ll be tasting, but because it’s a real working lodge where you will you be near thousands of oak barrels as well as vats filled with patiently ageing port. You’re also likely to bump into some of the people who are responsible for making it, work like our team of in-house coopers – one of the last in the port trade. I will taste a Cockburn's O Provador, Cockburn's 10-Year-Old Tawny and Cockburn's 20-Year-Old Tawny.
